Unemployment rate drops to 8.2%

Greece’s unemployment rate eased to 8.2 percent in June, down from 8.3 pct
in June 2006, with the number of unemployed people totaling slightly more than
403,000, the National Statistical Service (NSS) announced on Tuesday. The
service, in its monthly report, said the number of employed people in the
country totaled 4,529,233 and that the non-active population reached 4.27
million out of a total population of roughly 11 million. The number of
employed individuals grew steadily in the period from 2004 until today, while
the number of unemployed people fell steadily each year, NSS said. The
service said the unemployment rate fell from 9.9 pct in June 2004 to 9.5 pct in
June 2005; to 8.3 pct in June 2006 and to 8.2 pct in June 2007.
